about
There’s that quote, you know the one, about falling seven times and standing up eight. But what does it feel like before you stand? ‘Teardrops’ describes a different kind of failure. It speaks to the duality of pure joy and the lowest drop when it’s quickly taken from you, and it uses the metaphor of flying. However, this song speaks about personal relationships, especially with those closest to us who turn their backs in our time of need. Many of TOMKAT's lyrics provide a last triumphant verse, vowing to prove the villain wrong, yet this song does not. Despite sounding like a laid back, ‘90’s R&B vocal jam, this song ends in a heartbreaking way, almost relishing in the solemnity of failure: ‘I fall a million times/ I look up to the sky/ And oh that rain like/ Teardrops on my mind.’
lyrics
I’ve been flying so high,
I’ve been falling to hell.
What they see is a lie
But I hide it so well.
Never gave me your time,
Turned your back when I fell.
What they see is a smile
Cause I hide it so well.
I fall a million times,
I look up to the sky,
And oh that rain like
Teardrops on my mind.
I fall a million times,
I look up to the sky
And oh that rain like
Teardrops on my mind.
Cause I’m riding so high
When I’m running from home.
Leave the screaming behind
All those things hid below.
I fall a million times,
I look up to the sky,
And oh that rain like
Teardrops on my mind.
