about
‘Stay” gives us a chance to reflect upon the sometimes baffling changes that can take place in a significant relationship, whether it is romantic or a close friendship. We always seem to come on too strong, too much passion, with glasses that are way too rose-colored. ‘You came through like crashing waves/ I came down like salt and spray.” For the imagery, vocalist Katrina Cain called upon her days growing up on the coastlines of New England. “The stormy seas would come inland so far, that water would drown the marshes and flood the roads to my house. As the tide came in, waves would continue to crash upon the rocks, shooting saltwater straight up into the air. It sounds like beautiful imagery, but when two people begin a relationship this way, it cannot end well.” ‘Stay’, despite what the name implies, speaks of the feeling of a relationship ending like being shot in the back (‘We could never understand/ Now we hold explosions in our hands.’) and the realization that ‘I don’t wanna Stay.’
lyrics
Stay
You came through like crashing waves,
I came down like salt and spray.
We could never understand,
Now we hold explosions in our hands.
And I don’t wanna Stay.
We never had a chance
You beat me down and tied my hands
Now I have to walk away
From you, coming down like crashing waves.
And I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna Stay.
You come back for me again
And you stab me in the back.
Now we will never understand
And we hold explosions in our hands.
And I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna
I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna Stay.
