about
‘Phoenix’ is the ending we’ve been waiting for since ‘Drowning’ and ‘Teardrops’, it sends ‘Icarus' back into the air. ‘Phoenix’ is the triumphant return after falling, the giant middle finger to terrible exes, shitty friends, difficult societal norms, and your own self-doubt. With a touch of feminism, it characterizes all of those frustrating and confidence crushing experiences in a single male voice, constantly putting the vocalist down: “He said I got a lot of nerve/ don’t walk away, girl it ain’t your turn…” Yet, the song quickly comes to realization that “heroes”, despite the world’s blind worship, have plenty of room to fall, and the listener can sense the protagonist's resolve to take her rightful place. With a nod to her own struggles with depression, vocalist Katrina Cain vows that ‘Once and for all, I rise/ Once and for all/ I’ll fly.” Not to be taken lightly, she compares this newly discovered self to a “phoenix hurricane”, rising from the flame. This is also a slight acknowledge of the incredibly destructive 2005 Hurricane Katrina, with which Cain shares a name. Though she promises to be bold, powerful, and formidable, the song ends with a eerie calm, a reflective yet decisive call: once and for all, once and for all.
lyrics
He said, “You got a lot of nerve,
Don’t walk away, girl, ain’t your turn.”
He said I got a lot to learn,
But I know what I deserve.
Heroes seem to have it all, but there’s still room to fall.
Once and for all, I rise.
Once and for all, I fly.
Once and for all.
He said I got a lot to say,
But I don’t listen anyway.
His pedestal is overturned,
Oh, it’s more than he deserves.
Angels always have to fall and Hell can have them all.
Once and for all, I rise.
Once and for all, I fly.
I’ll end it all, I’ll get mine.
Once and for all, I rise.
Once and for all.
I will rise from the flame,
Like a Phoenix hurricane.
I’ll feel it all, I’ll end it all, you’ll feel it all.
Once and for all, I rise
Once and for all, I fly.
I’ll end it all, oh, I’ll get mine,
Once and for all, I rise,
Once and for all.
Once and for all, once and for all, once and for all, once and for all.
