about

A beautiful, lyrical inclusion, ‘Persephone’ offers the story of a young maiden, taken by an abductor who believes his actions are love. The story of Persephone is usually presented as a story of selfishness and violent assault. In an odd, quite un-feminist twist, vocalist Katrina Cain tells the story as it hasn’t previously been told: not from the perspective the maiden, but from the perspective of her abductor and rapist. The story is told that Persephone, the most beautiful of all goddesses, was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld, and taken as his bride. Upon her arrival, she ate three pomegranate seeds, and when she escaped to rejoin her mother on earth a curse was revealed: she must always return to her husband below. This was the ancient Greeks’ explanation for the three months of winter, the Earth is in mourning for her beautiful child. But what if, instead of emphasizing the sadness of the story, we suggest that Hades was simply in love? It may be dangerous to suggest these themes in real life, but this song seeks to change the storyline, and offer a perspective of undying, unending, unequivocal, unresolved love.

lyrics

You were born a goddess heir
Heaven and Earth could not compare.
I knew that I had to make you mine.

Feet that dance like rain in spring
Across my heart, I’ll be your king
And you’ll be safe, my darling I’ll be kind.

Persephone,
Come to me.
Persephone,
Say you love me!

In the night I come for you,
Chariots and steeds of blue,
I knew that we had to run and hide.

Down where only Death can go,
Styx and souls, the river flows.
And you’ll be safe, for you will be my bride.

Persephone,
Come to me.
Persephone,
Say you love me, oh!
Say you love, Say you love me!

Sweetheart, I can’t let you go.
Your home is here with me below.
And if your mother calls for you,
Come back to me, Persephone.

Say you love, Say you love me!
Say you love me!
