about

This was the first of several songs based on Greek mythology that Katrina Cain, vocalist and lyricist, wrote for the album. In this song, Cain illustrates her own fear of sharing her original music by using the story of Icarus.
‘What if I fly/ and If I fly too high/ what if I fall?’ For those unfamiliar, Icarus and his father were imprisoned in a labyrinth, and in order to escape, crafted wings out of feathers and wax. His father warned him not to fly too low, or the sea would drench his wings and weigh him down, yet not to fly too high and too close to the sun, lest his delicate wings melt and burn away. Icarus became too overzealous, wanting to fly as high as possible, and when his fragile wings burned in the sunlight, he tumbled to his death into the ocean. The story represents the duality of following a dream, and the fear of falling so low if you fail.”

lyrics

Fire in the morning sky,
Shining down my prison walls.
If I could leave I would get by,
Feathered wax won’t let me fall.

Heaven, what a maze I’m in,
Must get off this rock I’m on.
My father told me I could fly,
But feathered wax won’t last too long.

And so I dream of it,
Lift my body to the sky.
They warned me not to get too close,
Feathered wax won’t let me fly.

What if I fly?
And if I fly too high…
What if I fly?
And if I fly,
What if I fall?

Fire in the morning sky,
Shining down my prison walls.
