about

‘Drowning’ has meaning for two band members, one having experienced emotional drowning and another having almost drowned himself. After many rough years, culminating in unhealthy fatalistic thoughts, refusal to leave the house and subsequent failure of her last semester of college (among other personal details), Katrina Cain was urged to seek help and was diagnosed with severe clinical depression and generalized anxiety. Years of therapy and countless medications, all of which she stubbornly threw in the trash, followed. ‘Drowning’ is born not of the depressive period, but from the recovery. Describing the feeling of all of those years of darkness, felt in itself like a rise to the surface. In a similar vein, Jonny Harmon, drummer, told the band a story of his terrifying experience of actual, literal drowning. The studio was absolutely silent as he told his story of using his last ounce of energy to think clearly and float towards shore (he could no longer move his limbs) through the storm, and ultimately save himself. Both members pulled themselves from the water, and from their experiences, ‘Drowning’ was born.

lyrics

Fine lines in your face say it all,
You shut your eyes, just to watch me fall.
Got my demons that I’m wrestling.
Give my all just to give it all in.

And ooh, I think it’s too late
Don’t worry ‘bout me, I will never save face
And ooh, I think it’s the end,
Head’s underwater and I’m Drowning, Drowning.

Hear the voices filtering in,
I block the sound, scream as loud as I can.
Don’t blink, just become a machine.
You can’t die if you’re still feeling.

And ooh, I think it’s too late
Don’t worry ‘bout me, I will never save face
And ooh, I think I’ll head home.
Head’s underwater and I’m alone.

And ooh I think it’s too late,
Don’t worry ‘bout me I will never save face,
And ooh, I think it’s the end
Head’s underwater and I’m Drowning, Drowning

Maybe I’ll try it all again,
The feeling won’t stop whispering.
I’ll see your face just before I rise,
Buy my time, I will never die.

And ooh, I think it’s too late
Don’t worry ‘bout me, I will never save face
And ooh, I think I’ll head home.
Head’s underwater and I’m alone.

And ooh I think it’s too late,
Don’t worry ‘bout me I will never save face,
And ooh, I think it’s the end
Head’s underwater and I’m Drowning, Drowning, Drowning, Drowning, Drowning…
